Google Chromebook Life-Changing for Mobile Professionals and Only $200
Hard to believe you can buy a quality piece of technology for $200 these days, but I’d have to go further in saying that the Google Chromebook (the Acer is the one I purchased) is an AMAZING piece of technology and an incredible value at only $199. ($217 including tax!)
Is it the technical capabilities that makes it so great?
Not sure it’s that. View the Chromebook like a laptop… with a few limitations. If your’e a heavy Photoshop user and want to do mobile photo editing, then you’ll need a Macbook or a PC laptop to get the job done. Video editing? Well, your favorite tools are not going to work on the Chromebook. However – I have found that there are many noteworthy substitutes that can get the job done if in a crunch. but you have to be flexible.
The Chromebook should not be bought to be used a work tool if you need access to the many heavier installable programs people use to create, edit and share complex media. If you’re more of a wordsmith, heavy-Google apps user, then the Chromebook just might be the magic tool you’ve been looking for, and it’s cheaper than anything else we’ve found.
Let’s be really honest
The Google Chromebooks are a mobile “communication” tool, not workhorse meant to replace your PC or Mac laptop’s. Chromebooks are a tool you can use to stay inform, and also stay informed when on the go. If you need to edit video, this is not the tool. If you need to manage blogs, write a lot, email, use online versions of software’s like Google Drive for document management, then Chromebook is PERFECT for you.
Think of it as a “disposable laptop”
Nicholas Holland over at CentreSource Interactive was the one who recommended the Chromebook to me: “It’s a disposable laptop If it breaks you buy another one. We bought two for the kids, knowing they’d beat the heck out of them. That’s okay. They get to play, and if they drop them it’s not the end of the world.”
At the time I was seriously considering a used Macbook Pro. A cheap one. Well, first of all this is an oxymoron – There are no “cheap” Macbook Pro’s and you definitely get what you pay for. A used, $600 Macbook Pro is pretty slow and outdated. I asked Nick – “Where do you think I could get a decent Macbook Pro for under $600?” Nick did the right thing by asking me a simple question – “What are you going to use it for?” My reply: “I’d just like to be able to write, edit blogs, craft press releases, and that’s about it.” Nick’s response: “The Chromebook is your solution. They’re only $200 and employ ALL of Google’s most popular features like Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Voice, etc.. It’s perfect for what you want it for.”
Nick was right. It is perfect for what I needed it for. If you’re like me, and just need a tool that breaks you free from the office a day or two per week, allows you to work at Starbucks, the library, etc… and the basis for what you do is communicating via the Web and email, then a Chromebook may be your solution too.
A great benefit of using a Chromebook for blogging and online communications
I work with Nick in building top-level examples (POP’s) for Populr.me. This allows the Populr.me staff the ability to show businesses how Populr.me can be used to create impactful communications for their coworkers, employees and even their customers. Building a “POP” in Populr.me is something you do online. All it takes is a browser. However, it has one limitation if your’e a Google Chrome browser lover – The video capture component does not yet work in Chrome. That’s okay. I’d just do it at home, right? Well, for some odd reason, Populr.me’s video capture component works PERFECTLY in Chrome in the Chromebook! This means I can build Pop’s all day long on my Chromebook, and even employ the video capture tool which I use quite a bit.
Using Populr.me on a Chromebook = Awesome.
If you want to edit your next movie on a laptop, the Chromebook is not the right tool for you. If your’e like me and want to use email and most every other web-based tool known to man to work, play, and do it in just about any location where there’s Internet, then the Chromebook is the perfect tool for the job 🙂
